Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat Nuestra Señora del Santissimo Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) was originally the name given by the Domonican friars to Our Lady of Piat. In 1604, Our Lady of Piat was brought from Macau to the Philippines to aid in the evangelization of the Itawes region, covering the towns of Tabang, Malaweg, Tuau and Piat. It was concecrated in the church of Lallo which was then the Episcopal seat of the diocese of the former Nueva Segovia, and later brought to Piat and again, it was enshrined in one of the two altars at the Church of Sto. Domingo. The shrine was declared a Basilica Minore on June 22, 1999, a title conferred by the Holy See to shrines which contain images or relics of great importance. The other shrine which earned the same distinction is the Our Lady of Charity in La Union.
August 30, 2009 is when we reach Cagayan. It was almost 41 Km to be exact from Tugegarao. It was almost 5:30 pm when we reach Our Lady of Piat.from Town Proper of Cagayan where we spent our overnight stay. We were so tired riding our motorbikes so, we decided to ride the Strada of our friend cousin.
Every June and July, Piat comes alive with two festivals. From June 23 to 30, the Piat Sambali Festival is held, centered on the sambali, a war dance of the tribes that were united and converted to Christianity through the intercession of the Nuestra Senora de Piat. The festivities don't stop since on July 1 and 2, the feast of Nuestra Señora de Piat is celebrated.
The venerated image is erroneously referred to as Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary (that was the original title) when it is in fact the Nuestra Señora de Visitacion (Our Lady of the Visitation).
